Altoona man honoring life of fallen homeless friend by helping others

Blair Co., PA (WJAC) — Homelessness in many Pennsylvania cities has been a growing issue, with the problem being exacerbated during the pandemic. In Altoona, one man’s encounter with a homeless man just before he lost his battle to drug addiction changed his lifeto the point that he makes it his mission to help others in that position, in a movement named after his fallen friend. After Josh Roland lost his friend Ben in 2019, he started 'BEN Blessed' in his honor, to help other homeless people in Altoonajust like him.

BETHLEHEM, Pa. (AP) — The creators of marshmallow Peeps are offering a first-ever peep inside their Pennsylvania candy factory. Just Born Quality Confections company in Bethlehem is teaming up with the United Way on a sweepstakes. The grand prize is a behind-the-scenes tour of the factory, which has never been open to the public. The contest lets people across the country donate $5 to the United Way of Greater Lehigh Valley for a chance to visit the factory.

One person injured following vehicle vs bicycle crash in Westmont

JOHNSTOWN, Pa (WJAC) — One person was transported to the hospital following a vehicle versus bicycle crash Saturday afternoon in Westmont. According to 911 dispatchers, first responders were called to the scene, around 4:30 p.m., at the intersection of Goucher Street and Menoher Blvd. The extent of the person's injuries are unknown at this time. Our crew on scene says that portions of the intersection were blocked off for a short time.

Pirates sign pitcher Mitch Keller to 5-year extension

PITTSBURGH (WJAC) — According to Pittsburgh Pirates beat writer Jason Mackey, the team has reportedly agreed to a five-year contract extension with starting pitcher Mitch Keller. The new contract extension is reportedly worth $77 million. Keller was drafted by Pittsburgh in 2014 and made his MLB debut in 2019. Keller is coming off one of his best seasons, where he posted a record of 13-9, with a 4.21 ERA, and was selected to the 2023 MLB All-Star Game.

Steelers bring back veteran Myles Jack out of retirement

PITTSBURGH (AP) — So much for Myles Jack’s retirement. The Pittsburgh Steelers signed the veteran inside linebacker to the practice squad on Monday, three months after Jack stepped away from the game in the middle of training camp with the Philadelphia Eagles. Pittsburgh (6-4) needs help at inside linebacker following season-ending injuries to Cole Holcomb and Kwon Alexander in recent weeks. Elandon Roberts played every defensive snap in a 13-10 loss to Cleveland on Sunday, with Mykal Walker — signed to the practice squad in late October before being promoted to the active roster last week — taking the majority of the snaps at the other inside linebacker spot.

15 face felony drug charges after Cambria County bust

JOHNSTOWN – Fifteen people are facing felony drug charges after a warrant sweep in Cambria County during the past 24 hours, officials said Thursday. The Cambria County Drug Task Force conducted the raid, along with several other law enforcement agencies. All individuals in custody have been transported to Central Booking for processing. If your family is at risk of losing water service inside of your home a new temporary assistance program could help in paying your bills. The Pennsylvania Department of Human Services is rolling out their Low-Income Household Water Assistance Program, or LIHWAP, for the second time since its start. The program provides temporary assistance to households that need help with water bills or who may lose water service. “Eligible households can receive one crisis grant for drinking water service and one crisis grant for wastewater service of up to 2500$ each,"
